Singapore 20Mar09

Chinatown Street Food Market

Singapore was exactly the type of trip I wanted: SHOPPING &  FOOD! We only had 2 days in the city but boy did we take advantage of it! And we sure did eat a lot!

I love that in Singapore, it’s perfectly okay to have about 8 meals. Unfortunately you can’t chew gum, spit or be gay. Not gay as in happy, gay as in homosexual. Apparently it’s illegal?! Well, we still happened to stumble upon 3 lesbian bars on our last night so I guess it can’t be that bad.

We landed in Singapore around 1pm, got to the fabulous Scarlet Hotel and ventured off to do some shopping. We went a little shopping crazy on Orchard Road - I missed Zara so much - and after about 5 hours of shopping we decided, it’s time for food. We made our way back to Chinatown and found the hawker center in the Chinatown Complex. Vini had chicken rice and roast pork with rice for about $5. I had some vegetarian plate for about the same price. SO CHEAP and SO GOOD!

The Scarlet Hotel knew it was Vini’s birthday from his passport and sent up a very delicious and beautifully presented birthday cake:

Unfortunately, we were so exhausted we passed out at 7 and didn’t wake up until the next morning.

Day two of Singapore was mostly eating, sight seeing, eating, shopping and eating. We started the day off at a famous kaya toast shop: Ya Kun Kaya Toast. It’s famous cause they say they’re famous, but since it’s a chain, and it had heaps of people there… I’m guessing it’s pretty famous! We had the traditional kaya toast, which is thinly sliced bread, toasted and injected with slabs of butter and this peanut butter-like paste. It’s served with soft eggs and coffee or tea. We had both!

Then we did the touristy things:

Then we stumbled upon the Food & Beverage Fair 2009 at the convention center…  A FOOD FAIR?!?!?! It was amazing, rows and rows of Asian food samples, Singaporean specialties, really bizarre diet drinks, mountains of sticky rice and the best part the best Singaporean food stalls at the end.

We tried a few things including a chicken pie (Vini loves pies, being in Singapore doesn’t stop him from having a pie) and hot and sour soup with scallops!

Now, this may seem riduculous but for a late lunch we had to make our way back to the CPK we saw the day before. I know I know… why go to CPK in Singapore when there’s all these other places to try. Well, a.) it was where had our first unofficial yet now official date. b.) I haven’t had cpk in over 2 years, I need me my CPK! And the artichoke dip never tasted better… mmm…

For dinner, we made up for our American splurge at lunch by going traditional Singaporean - Chili Crab! Okay so technically we had the Black Pepper Crab. Still Singaporean and still famous right?

Water Spinach, Mussels & Beer

Our last meal in Singapore was at the Chinatown Street Food Market (or something like that), we ate at a stall that our concierge recommended. Ordered the black pepper crab, the mussels, some water spinach and washed it all down with some Tiger beer. It was absolutely delicious. Everything in Singapore has spice, and to me that’s good eating.

After the meal, we ventured off to a few bars on Club St. Most of them seemed to be dominated by lesbians singing karaoke or westerners drinking poshy wine. We made some friends at CU (it used to be called Coyote Ugly until legal action forced them to change to CU), and somehow shots were involved. Nice people, but we could have done without the extra shots. Needless to say, we woke up late and barely made our flight the next day.

Oh Singapore, such good times.

Soy Latte @ Joe Art of Coffee

It’s been a little difficult finding delicious good coffee in NY after being spoiled in Sydney. None of that brewed stuff, I’m talking about espresso based coffee. I finally found a local spot on the Upper West Side that has good coffee, Joe the Art of Coffee. Although, it’s not quite like the ones I have in Sydney, it’s pretty close. I give it a 4/5, an extra point for the mere fact that it’s the only good coffee in my neighborhood.
